LOCKS

How to get started with dreadlocks ?

1) Make a “consultation” appointment in a Tribus Urbaines salon for a hair and scalp diagnosis and to discuss your preferences and lifestyle.

2) Along with your hairdresser from Tribus Urbaines, determine the method that’s best for you.

3) Make an appointment to start growing your locks using your chosen method.

How long does it take for the hair to be locked?

It depends on the hair. It takes, on average, 6 months to a year with the twist method. With the crochet method, accompanied by the needle, the locks are almost instantaneous.

Can people with all hair types wear dreadlocks?

Yes, however the techniques used to start and tighten locks will differ depending on your hair’s texture. In addition, the following prerequisites need to be fulfilled :

1) hair all over the head (locks should be avoided in the event of alopecia or baldness)

2) a healthy scalp (without irritation, flaking, dandruff, etc.);

3) a minimum of 5cm length of hair on the head

4) natural hair that has not undergone any chemical transformation (straightening or other)

How to maintain your dreadlocks?

Adopt a good hair care routine.

  • During the start-up period, we recommend: 1 shampooing every 3 weeks followed by tightening and a protective hairstyle in order to let the locks form gradually and allow the hair to grow; during this period you do not have to worry about your hair (do not shampoo or undo the protective hairstyle) until your next appointment.

Remember to protect the hair before going to bed to preserve the hairstyle as long as possible and to avoid dust in your hair

  • once the locks are mature: shampoo once a month accompanied by tightening. If necessary, you can also use a clarifying shampoo (deep shampoo) in order to extract excess product, dust, etc. every 4 months.

What hairstyles can be worn with dreadlocked hair?

All hairstyles: braids, twists, updos, curls. You can even go from long to short without having to cut them.

Does hair grow with dreadlocks?

Having dreadlocks doesn’t change the process of hair growth. Locked or not, hair grows on average about 1 cm per month. The speed of growth will vary depending on the routine and the products used. On the other hand, the hair grows back in it’s natural form – not locked! For this reason it’s necessary to tighten the locks regularly.

Can we repair a damaged or broken dreadlocks?

Over time, dreadlocks can become thinner, brittle, or even break. By using the hook and / or the needle it is possible to repair them but in some cases it is better to cut off the damaged part.

Should we trim off the tips of dreadlocks?

Trimming the tips off of dreadlocks isn’t necessary. However, you can trim your locks if you want to keep them a certain length or if you want to shorten them.

Can we color dreadlocks?

Coloring is possible, however, it is a relatively long chemical process which weakens the hair. It is therefore strongly recommended to color only the top of your hair.

Is it possible to undo your dreadlocks?

It is almost impossible to remove dreadlocks made with a hook. On the other hand, with patience, it is possible to undo locks performed with the twist method. This service is NOT available at Tribus Urbaines salons.

Do you do « sisters » dreadlocks?

Sister dreadlocks are much thinner than traditional locks and require a specific crochet technique which takes a lot of time (between 10h and 36h depending on the length and thickness of your hair). We do NOT offer this service at the salon.

Is there particular age that’s best to start dreadlocks?

Beautiful hair is for peole of all ages! We simply recommend going through the consultation appointment first regardless of when you start. For children, the first appointment is an opportunity to explain what is involved and to confirm the feasibility of this hairstyle. Regardless of age, you will need to come to the salon regularly to properly maintain your hair.
